Postoperative Instructions Following Adenoidectomy
This information is designed to answer questions about what to expect following adenoidectomy. Calls for answers to routine questions should be made during our regular office hours. For emergencies, a Coastal ENT physician is on call 24 hours a day/7 days a week and can be reached by calling our office number.
Before Leaving the Outpatient Surgery Center
Prior to discharge form the surgicenter, please check with your nurse and make sure you have a postop appointment scheduled. Also ask if you need any medicine or prescriptions to take home with you. Many times no prescription medicine is needed following adenoidectomy. On occasion, an antibiotic may be prescribed, and tylenol or ibuprofen should be adequate for pain control. TAKE YOUR MEDICATION AS DIRECTED ON THE PRESCRIPTION BOTTLE.
Recovery after Adenoidectomy
1) There should be little discomfort following adenoidectomy. One may experience some blood streaked drainage from the nose or coughed up during the first few days following adenoidectomy.
2) The patient should be be quiet and rest at home the first day following surgery. Activity can be gradually increased over the next week, but strenuous physical activity should be avoided the first week after surgery.
3) The diet should consist if foods that require little or no chewing the first few days -- avoid hot (temperature spicy) foods for a week after surgery.
4) Please report to the office any bright red, active bleeding from the nose or throat, fever over 101 F, or pain that is not relieved by tylenol or ibuprofen.
5) Avoid aspirin and any products containing aspirin for 2 weeks following surgery.
